Hula in Hilo

The Merrie Monarch Festival, the internationally acclaimed hula competition, is in full swing. If you’re lucky enough to have tickets, I’m jealous.

Fortunately, there are plenty of free demonstrations in Hilo to satisfy my hula craving. We had a wonderful afternoon watching the lovely ladies of Halau O Kawaenanakoa, while listening to slack key guitar and ukulele.

We ended our day strolling through the artisan stalls at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Aren’t the fresh leis gorgeous? I wish you could smell them…
